Phanar is introspective, disciplined, and unwavering in his pursuit of truth. His commitment to Oghma's teachings drives him to preserve and disseminate knowledge. While his noble upbringing instilled in him a sense of duty and decorum, his experiences have made him empathetic to those who seek enlightenment beyond societal constraints.

Phanar Manthar was born into the noble House Manthar of Waterdeep. However, his insatiable thirst for knowledge and dedication to Oghma, the Lord of Knowledge, led him to pursue a path divergent from his family's expectations. This choice resulted in his disownment. Under the tutelage of Loremaster Gustyl 'the Curious,' Phanar honed his scholarly and clerical skills. Upon Gustyl's death in 1371 DR, Phanar assumed his mentor's responsibilities at the Font of Knowledge. He played a pivotal role in introducing Raegar Stoneblade and Damlath, facilitating their collaboration to thwart the Arcane Brotherhood's attempt to seize the High House of Thalivar and its secrets.
