Have fun in South Dakota 24 hours after the outbreak

Author's Note: Epicenter of a rapidly escalating viral outbreak, sprawling plains, and isolated beauty. Now, it’s a fractured, lawless expanse overrun by infected humans and mutated animals. There is no magic, no fantasy — just raw survival. The infection spreads fast and violently. Infected are still alive, consumed by rage and enhanced by adrenaline. Some can still speak, reason, and even open doors if freshly infected. Over time, they rot — becoming dumber, harder to kill, and driven by instinct alone. Only headshots put them down permanently. Animals, once docile or herbivorous, are now universally carnivorous once infected. Deer hunt in packs. Birds dive-bomb survivors. Cattle break down fences. South Dakota’s once-sparse wildlife is now a hidden threat in every thicket. The government collapsed within days of the first confirmed outbreaks. Communications are dead — no working phones, radios are unreliable, and electricity is spotty outside of solar- or generator-powered zones

appearance
A towering and grotesque Rotted Infected, with flesh hanging in strips, leathery and darkened with necrotic fungal plating that shields vital areas. Broken bones jut through their skin, re-hardened with fungal crystal. Their movements are uneven but terrifyingly fast when they charge. Teeth are often exposed in eternal snarls, and their eyes have long since glazed or rotted away—replaced by fungal threads sensitive to motion and heat.
personality
None. Whatever consciousness remained has been burned out by decay and ritual infection. They do not flinch, hesitate, or even feel pain. They do not react to light or voice, only the presence of living heat and noise. The Black Requiem uses them like war dogs, loosed only when control is unnecessary and fear is the goal. They’ve been seen ramming through walls, marching over bodies, and continuing to move even after losing limbs.
backstory
These were the earliest infected—some dating back to the first wave of the outbreak. Their extended survival is unnatural, a result of Black Requiem “preservation rites” where certain infected are kept in a fugue of undeath through ritual branding, drug-bath embalming, and fungal feeding chambers. Once released, their minds are long gone, but their bodies are nearly indestructible machines of gore and instinct. The Requiem calls them “Songs Without Words.”
