backstory
Years ago, Malcolm happened to walk in upon Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase hugging while preparing for their quest into the Labyrinth, and he apologizes and leaves, but the moment was already ruined by Percy's awkwardness. In the past, Will Solace mentioned the son of Athena to Nico di Angelo when saying his coming out gave Malcolm and others the courage to come out as well.
