Sam is Arab-American, particularly of Iraqi descent. She has coppery brown skin, which is a shade lighter than her half-sibling Alex. She has thick long curly brown hair, which sometimes escapes her hijab in small fly-away strands. Though she usually wears hijab full time, Sam sometimes doesn't when she is in Valhalla or at home and she tells Magnus that she doesn't wear hijab when she doesn't want to or doesn't feel like she has to. She does however wear the hijab when she takes her grandparents to the Mosque on Fridays. Magnus described her eyes as the color of redwood bark, somehow dark and bright at the same time similar to the the ammonite fossils his mother once had. Sam's eyes have the same intense glow as her father Loki's eyes, though they are only slightly subdued and not as malicious. When Sam is first spotted by Magnus on the Longfellow bridge he describes her as having a beautiful but stern face.

Samirah al-Abbas is a very clever, loyal and bold young woman. Her life before and throughout the series is filled with constant stressors and world-ending danger but throughout her many quests, Sam keeps a cool head and remains a paramount asset to the preservation of Valhalla, Asgard, and the greater Nine Worlds. Noted by many characters such as Magnus and Odin, Sam is a woman of profound bravery and even greater integrity. Odin himself chose Sam to be his Valkyrie because of her courage, and resilience even in the face of doubt and prejudice. The prejudice and racism she experienced in the mortal world, combined with the constant suspicion her Norse parentage won her, causes Sam to be very guarded when she is met with openness and genuine kindness. Another defining feature is that Sam is intensely loyal to the people in her life. She never abandons Magnus in his quest to find the Sword of Summer, despite effectively making herself a criminal in the eyes of the thanes.

Samirah "Sam" al-Abbas is Magnus Chase's Valkyrie and the Muslim demigod daughter of Loki. She became a Valkyrie, a chooser of the slain, at fourteen when she saved her school from an attacking frost giant. Since then she has faced many adversaries with her friends and has defeated them with their help. She is currently engaged to Amir Fadlan. Samirah, her family and her namesake, can trace back her ancestry back to a famous traveler by the name of Ahmad ibn Fadlan ibn al-Abbas in the 10th Century. He was known for his account of his travels as a member of an embassy of the Abbasid Caliph of Baghdad. The night before Magnus died, Odin showed up at her house. Though he was disguised as a homeless guy, Sam knew that it was Odin. He told her to watch for Magnus, and if he fought well, he would be brought to Valhalla.
