Description
The MiG-23 was the first "successful" attempt at a domestic Soviet TSF, using at the time relatively new technologies like variable-mechanism wings integrated into its jump units. This put it at a performance rating of a quasi-2nd Generation TSF, but at the cost of poor maintainability and operational uptime as compared to the MiG-21 Balalaika. Its low operational readiness made it unpopular amongst pilots, and so it was quickly replaced with the MiG-27 Aligatori.
