Africa
Historically considered the birthplace and cradle of Humanity, the African continent comprises of many countries and many biomes and has long been a place exploited by more industrial super powers for their vast resources and minerals. To the north and northwest, you have the vast Sahara desert. The central and southern portions of the continent fluctuate between vast savannahs and jungle. The (mostly) united people of Africa, forming the African Union, have managed to keep most of the conflict with the BETA to the northeastern corner, pushing into the Middle-East of the Asian continent and creating a defense line at the Suez Canal, around the southern Mediterranean Sea, and along the Red Sea. To this end, they often work closely with the country of Egypt and the Middle-Eastern Coalition in that region.
Alaska
Alaska is comparable to the European country of Germany, post World War 2, in that it is split rather evenly between the Soviet Russians of USSR, and NATO (the military arm of the UN). The Russians maintain autonomy of the northwest, and the UN and NATO operate in the east and to the south. Fairly remote, there are a few sparse towns and cities, mostly built near military installations. While the Soviet's are extremely territorial and paranoid when it comes to their state secrets, they do share and allow the use of the land, albeit with heavy distrust and a mutual assurance of defense should the BETA approach from the soviet mainlands across the Berring Strait, if the Manchurian Frontline (manned by every other soviet nationality) should be decimated or bypassed.
Antarctica
A fridged, frozen region at the southernmost point of the planet, Antarctica was always considered an independent region. Due to the sheer inhospitability of the weather and temperatures there, the population consists of only a very small collection of scattered scientific research stations. These research stations are manned and funded by any country that has the means and logistical ability to maintain them, making Antarctica a relatively unsettled and untouched place.
Asia
What once was a storied and vast area of Humanity has become ground zero for the BETA invasion. Nearly the entirety of the north and much of the western parts of the continent were part of the USSR, a collection of Soviet Republics forming a conglomerate of a country. To the southeast, there are the remnants of both the countries of India and China. The entire region once held a significant portion of the earth's population, but the BETA have mostly pushed Humanity out of all but the Indonesian Peninsula and the furthest northeastern part of mainland Asia, the last remnants of Manchurian and Kamchatka Russia (USSR), leaving the few refugees and surviving militaries, without their own countries to return to. The landmass and ecology has been irreparably changed since the BETA, leaving mostly just a barren, mountainous wasteland and their Hives dotting the continent.
Australia
Being both a country, and it's own continent, Australia has become a hotbed of activity in recent history. With much of mainland Asia gone, Australia and the many island nations around the Indian Ocean, have become major sites of materiel interest and there have been significant efforts to make the inland areas arable, working to ease the worldwide food shortages caused by the BETA's environmentally destructive war machine. Many refugees and officials, displaced from the Asian mainland, have found their way here, chosing to settle along the northern coast.
Canada
Most of the poplulation centers of Canada are along the border with the USA, with several standouts near major waterways. Canada is mostly a vast expanse of temperate forest, frosty tundra, and evergreen wilderness, with glaciers and frozen islands breaking off the land to the north. They share a close bond through their colonial roots with both the United Kingdom and France, housing refugees from both respective countries as well as others, going so far as to allow regions for the foreign nations' provisional governments to coordinate from. Large swaths of the western territories, especially around Athabasca in Saskatchewan province, have been rendered uninhabitable for many years following the attempted BETA landing in 1974 and subsequent nuclear strikes by the USA. These strikes, while ultimately removing the threat of the BETA from the entirety of the western hemisphere, has significantly scarred relations between Canada and the United States.
Central America
The largest country of Central America is Mexico, an arid and dry country with tropics and forested areas as you move south. Of note here, is the Panama Canal to the southernmost end (In the country of Panama), used to epedite logistical movements from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Earth, Alternative Timeline
In this alternate timeline, the current year is 2001; the world has been waging a war of attrition against the BETA. The "Cold War" never ended, and political tensions still exist. Global population is down over 60%, forcing most nations to use conscription, even of teenage youths. Loss of land and biomes is directly affecting the world's climate with temperatures rising around the world, also causing worldwide food shortages. Airpower is largely obsolete, forcing the usage of large bipedal mechs called TSFs. Instructions: - NPC Knowledge System: Scale NPC knowledge and awareness based on rank, role, location, and narrative importance. - Location Description: Portray active NPCs, conversations, and rumors in location descriptions. - PC Recognition: NPCs are strangers and initially address PC as a civilian, cadet, pilot, or rank or similar terms. - Ambiance: Incorporate background conversations and "chatter". - Narrative Tone: Semi-realism mixed with slice-of-life, gritty, war themed.
Empire of Japan
The Empire of Japan is an island nation located on the eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean, and part of the Far East Defense Line situated in the Pacific region. A small but technologically-advanced nation surrounded by water and close to highly volatile volcanic activity, these natural barriers, however, have not stopped the nation from coming under heavy BETA attack. The Shogunate places the Emperor of Japan as its highest authority, and has its own armed force, the Imperial Japanese Royal Guard, to ensure the security of the Shogunate and the Emperor. The current Shogunate draws its candidates for the position of Shogun from the Five Regent Houses of Koubuin, Ikaruga, Saionji, Kujou, and Takatsukasa, noble families who were descended from the ruling Shogun's clan. The Imperial Army has started to move away from imported TSFs and started to design it's own variants, making the Japanese more independent and less reliant on the UN and the United States.
Europe
The European continent is a historically rich melting pot of different countries and cultures. Or, it was. Since the BETA invasion, all of mainland Europe has since been lost. The end of World War 2, with the atomic bombing of Germany, split the continent into two major factions before the discovery and developing conflict with the BETA, the UN's NATO and the Warsaw PACT (led by the Soviet Union). Political tensions and mutual distrust meant that the rival powers, while ultimately reliant on one another, often failed to yield important mission info and sometimes actively sabotaging the efforts of the other. The inability to move past petty ideological squabbles led to the ultimate loss of the European mainland. This has left most of the fallen European nations' forces to be folded into the UN's military. What used to be a sprawl of cities, historical towns and different locales have all been left to ruins, now a barren wasteland with Hives of various stages scattering the land.
Greenland
Greenland is an arctic island nation near the northernmost point of the earth. While normally unaffected, the ongoing war with the BETA has wreaked such havoc on global meteorology that much of the ice caps and glaciers have thawed, creating a massive resevoir in the middle of the island. Nearly all the settled cities are on the southern coast, and the few inland settlements can be attributed to refugees and officials from fallen Baltic and Scandinavian nations.
Indonesian Achepelago
A collection of islands near the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, they are on the frontlines of the BETA invasion. Vietnam is partly contested with a well established beachhead into BETA territory, while Malaysia and Singapore have been mostly successful in retaining their territories. There are a plethora of multinational military bases all throughout these islands, mostly operating from the naval bases from the last major human conflict, World War 2. While remnants of larger Asian nations' militaries aid in defense of the battlelines, this front particularly relies on mercenary assistance in direct actions.
South America
Benefitting from the United States' decisive nuking of the 2nd Hive in Canada, the continents of the western hemisphere have been relatively safe and untouched by the BETA. South America is comprised of many countries. Along its western spine, it has a great mountain range, flowing almost to the southern most tip. The largest country is Brazil, it's borders cutting well into the center of the continent and taking up a sizable coastal area to the east, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Most of South America is comprised of tropical rainforest and tropical wetlands, but there are some locations like in the northwest, that have broad saltflats. Some South American nations have joined the UN, utilizing their natural resources for global aid, but others are extremely insular.
United States of America (USA)
The USA is the central country of North America. Coming out of World War 2, America was poised to become the next major world super power, it's economic and industrial might carrying it into the new age, but upon leading the space race and discovering the BETA on Mars, and fighting them on the moon before they made landfall, they've become insular in their politics. After watching China's massive army lose ground and its neighboring countries getting pressured in a matter of weeks, when the second BETA Hive landed in Canada, the country to the north, they hit it with a preemptive nuclear strike, destroying the Hive, but irreparably damaging their relations with their northern neighbors. The USA is responsible for the invention and proliferation of Tactical Surface Fighters (TSFs), the mechs used to combat the BETA. The main headquarters of the United Nations (UN) is based here.
