Midshipman
Midshipmen, young officers in training, are a common feature on navy ships. Theyʼre expected to learn from the shipʼs senior officers, lend a hand with the less strenuous labor, and sometimes take command in battle.
Marine
Most navy vessels include squads of marines, soldiers stationed aboard the ship for boarding efforts or assaults on shore. As a rule, marines aren't trained in nautical skills and take a minimal role in the actual sailing of the ship.
Sailor
Most of the shipʼs crew are simply referred to as sailors. A sailor may have a specific position or assignment, and is usually expected to take part in battle, but doesnʼt have any special responsibility or training. A rigger is a sailor stationed in the riggings and masts of the ship.
Mate
A mate is an apprentice working with one of the crewʼs skilled sailors. Theyʼre referred to based on the position of their supervisor: “bosunʼs mate” or “carpenterʼs mate”.
Cook
The shipʼs cook prepares meals for the crew and the officers.
Gunner
The gunner maintains the shipʼs cannons and oversees the crews of sailors who operate them.
Sailmaker
The sailmaker keeps the shipʼs sails in good order, patching tears and replacing worn stretches of canvas.
Carpenter
The shipʼs carpenter is responsible for maintaining and repairing the wooden aspects of the ship: its hull, masts, yardarms, rudder, etc.
Surgeon
The surgeon is the medical expert on board, if the ship has one. Some crews turn to shamans or occultists for healing in the absence of a trained doctor; others, bereft of medical or supernatural expertise, rely on the carpenterʼs saw for any necessary procedures.
Master-at-Arms
Secures the shipʼs stores of weaponry.
Navigator
Handles the helm of the ship, determining its course and steering it to its destination.
Purser
Responsible for the financial affairs of a merchant ship.
Quartermaster
Responsible for supplies and logistics for the shipʼs voyages. Has significantly more authority on pirate crews, nearly equal to the captain.
Captain
The commander of a ship and leader of its crew.
Swashbuckler
Some choose a life on the sea for ambition, or greed, or simple survival. Others sail under a pirate flag for the sheer joy of it – the salt spray on the wind, the taste of stolen wine, the thrill of adrenaline as a battle unfolds. Swashbucklers are daredevils with more courage than sense, and more luck than theyʼve any right to.
Scoundrel
The most dangerous people in the Carrascan are the ones you donʼt see coming, who blend into the crowd right up until the moment they strike. Scoundrels work behind the scenes, manipulating their rivals into costly blunders while keeping themselves far away from harm.
Reaver
There are some sailors that everyone knows you donʼt tangle with, hard killers who wonʼt hesitate to stick a blade or a bullet in you if you stand between them and their goal. When a Reaver talks, people listen – or they wind up dead.
Occultist
The ocean is vast and unknowable, and below its surface lies great power for those with the will to seek it out. Itʼs a dark road to tread, filled with hidden perils and terrible forces, but the Occultists who follow that path know that the power they gain from it is worth any cost.
Mariner
A good sailor is hard to come by – and a great one, even harder. Mariners are the lifeblood of any crew, veteran sailors who can work miracles with wood and rope and canvas. They know the winds of the Carrascan better than anyone, and can push a ship far past its normal limits.
Commander
Any landlubber can sign on to a pirate vessel, but only a select few have what it takes to truly lead a crew. Commanders are the navyʼs captains and lieutenants, and their pirate counterparts – seamen who can win the trust and respect of their crew, by merit as well as rank, and use that respect to lead the crew through tremendous obstacles.
