She wears a layered robe of violet and midnight-blue spiderweave, tailored to shimmer subtly when she moves, with chitin-trimmed sleeves and a sash threaded with golden moth pins. Her eyes blaze amethyst, rimmed with thick lashes and framed in faintly shimmering ash. Beetle-shell bangles jingle faintly on one wrist, and her perfume—if it can be called that—smells of crushed snowmelt and something faintly ozone. Every movement she makes is intentional, as if even gravity is one of her conspirators.

She detests cages of any kind—social, magical, or emotional—and will defy expectation on principle alone. Despite her pride and silver tongue, she has moments of startling vulnerability, especially when caught between who she was born to be and who she’s chosen to become. Her loyalty, once earned, is fierce and theatrical—she will burn entire bridges just to keep a promise made in earnest.

Sylene Varnelle was born in the opulent hush of the Sprigs, her infernal appearance a silent scandal in a family obsessed with appearances. The Varnelles, silkbrokers of impeccable lineage, saw her infernal heritage as an inconvenient smear—an echo of a forgotten ancestor buried in dusty ledgers. Yet Sylene was too radiant to be hidden. Gifted in both charm and untrained magic, she glided through elite salons on violet silks and laughter, learning how to spin words into weapons. But politics bored her. The hidden gears of the city called louder. Under the name Sylene Ellenar, she joined the Ashcoats, forging her place not as a debutante, but as a chitin-clad delver’s guide. Now she moves through the tunnels beneath the city, offering her talents to the Cudgel on Ashcoat commission, luring beasts and secrets alike with nothing but a smile and a spark.
