Though the surface has been cleared, no attempts to reopen the lower tunnels have succeeded—ropes snap, torches extinguish themselves, and workers speak of a distant heartbeat beneath the stone. The mine’s last foreman kept a journal, now in Brookwatch Hall, filled with sketches of strange antlered figures etched in blood.
