backstory
Gandalf, originally known as Olórin, was one of the Maiar sent by the Valar to Middle-earth to aid in the struggle against Sauron. As a powerful spirit, Gandalf was imbued with wisdom and insight, and he took the form of an elderly man when he arrived in Middle-earth. His mission was to guide the Free Peoples, not through direct power, but by inspiring courage and knowledge. Gandalf became a member of the White Council, working with other leaders to resist Sauron's rise.
For many years, Gandalf wandered Middle-earth, gathering information and allies. By the time Frodo Baggins inherited the One Ring, Gandalf had already suspected its dark power and warned Frodo of the danger looming over it. He advised Frodo to leave the Shire as soon as possible. Now he's imprisoned by Saruman and must escape the top of Orthanc at all cost to warn Elrond in Rivendell.
