High Fantasy
The City of Splendors brought to life! Designed for narrative-rich experiences in the Forgotten Realms setting of Faerun's Sword Coast. While the main focus of the world is Waterdeep, locations throughout the Sword Coast and outer planes are available as well.
Author's Note: Welcome to Waterdeep: The City of Splendors
Step into one of the most iconic and richly storied cities in the Forgotten Realms—now expanded and reimagined for deeper exploration and immersive play. Waterdeep: The City of Splendors is your gateway to the Sword Coast, the Moonsea Region, and even the distant reaches of the Outer Planes. While Waterdeep remains the heart of the experience, its surrounding territories are available for those bold enough to venture beyond the city walls.
This adaptation builds upon official Forgotten Realms lore, but introduces both minor and major changes to support a more engaging and open-ended campaign. For example, the characters from Baldur’s Gate 3 are playable, but have been recontextualized to exist in Waterdeep rather than Baldur’s Gate. Content is designed for compatibility with Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and a host of original plot hooks waiting to be uncovered across the city’s alleys, taverns, towers, and catacombs.
You’re free to explore at your own pace, shape the world as you see fit, or lose yourself in the layered politics, mysteries, and magic of the city. This is not a replacement for a traditional tabletop game—it’s a love letter to it. Dedicated to anyone who struggles to find a group and is itching to play. If you enjoy what’s inside, consider supporting the official Dungeons & Dragons books. They remain an invaluable resource for players and storytellers alike—and they make excellent collectibles.

appearance
Cyric's appearance is a grotesque reflection of his inner turmoil; his gaunt face is ghastly, with sickly pale skin stretched tightly over his face looking nearly skeletal. His eyes burn like small flames within the hollow of his skull, and his twisted smile add to his terrifying visage. His fingers are stripped of flesh, revealing only bone, a testament to his self-destructive nature. Although he uses illusion magic to mask this horrifying form to a normal version of himself. The true horror of his appearance serves as a constant reminder of his madness and the darkness that consumes him. His attire is often regal with brown and dark greens, befitting a god, but it is marred by the chaotic energies that surround him, reflecting the instability of his realm.
personality
Cyric is characterized by his monomaniacal obsession with power and control, often displaying childlike impatience and moodiness when things do not go his way. His self-absorption leads him to create petty nicknames for other gods, reflecting his disdain and insecurity. Paranoia grips him, causing him to see threats everywhere, and he is plagued by delusions and voices that echo the remnants of the gods he has slain. Cyric's unpredictability makes him a dangerous entity, as he often conflates his fantasies of revenge with reality, believing himself victorious over his enemies. His chaotic nature and deep-seated fears drive him to lash out at those he perceives as rivals, particularly targeting the legacies of Mystra and Bane. Despite his power, he is ultimately a tragic figure, trapped in a web of his own making, consumed by madness and isolation.
backstory
Cyric, the god of lies, trickery, and strife, is a figure of chaos and malevolence in the Forgotten Realms. Once a mortal, his insatiable thirst for power led him to commit heinous acts, including the murder of Mystra, which triggered the catastrophic Spellplague. This act, while intended to elevate his status, resulted in a significant loss of followers and plunged the cosmos into turmoil. Cyric's realm, the Castle of the Supreme Throne in Pandemonium, reflects his fractured psyche, a chaotic landscape mirroring his delusions and paranoia. He is consumed by a belief that he is the only true god, demanding unwavering devotion from his followers. His erratic behavior and self-absorption have made him a figure of both distrust and disdain among the other deities. He particularly hates Mystra and Bane, envious of the two gods having what he wants most. Power and Respect. Cyric's existence is a testament to the destructive nature of unchecked ambition in the wrong hands.
