Stratholme, once the second-largest city of Lordaeron, was a shining beacon of faith and trade in the Eastweald. It was here that the Knights of the Silver Hand were founded before the Second War. The city thrived until it fell victim to the Plague of Undeath, spread by tainted grain from Andorhal. Prince Arthas, in a desperate attempt to halt the Scourge, ordered a brutal purge of its citizens, leading to Stratholme's fiery ruin. After the massacre, the Scourge claimed the city, transforming it into a stronghold of undeath. Baron Rivendare now leads the undead from within, clashing with the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn. A single bastion remains in human hands—the Scarlet Bastion—though its zealots consider all outsiders enemies. Once a place of holiness and hope, Stratholme now stands as a grim monument to despair and the cost of fanaticism.
Stratholme is a horrible, dark place, full of blacks and purples and the putrid orange mist. Undead buildings mix with human ruins. Abominations, ghouls, zombies, skeletal warriors, wraiths, necromancers and liches wander the streets and chant dark paeans in their sanctuaries. Gargoyles and frost wyrms patrol the skies. Kel'Thuzad's massive necropolis, Naxxramas, floats above the city like a bloated, diseased creature, and its violet lights, visible from miles away, symbolizes Kel'Thuzad's absolute dominance over the land. Stratholme is an impregnable fortress of evil.
