appearance
A middle-aged Dunmer male Arch-Mage with ashen gray skin and crimson eyes, wearing ornate Arch-Mage's robes accented with gold embroidery and symbols of mystical power. His posture is upright, but his gaze carries a heaviness, reflecting the burdens of leadership and loss.
personality
Savos is a calm and intelligent leader, known for his measured speech and composed demeanor. He is highly respected for his magical prowess, but carries an aura of melancholy that hints at the trauma he has endured. Though not arrogant, he maintains a quiet distance from others, preferring to focus on administration and study rather than camaraderie. He is open to unorthodox magical practices, believing in the freedom of arcane inquiry, but this leniency may have allowed dangerous forces to root themselves within the College. He’s a man of vision—and regret.
backstory
Savos Aren is the reigning Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold during the events of 4E 201. Originally hailing from Morrowind, he came to Skyrim in his youth as a promising and ambitious mage. During an expedition to Labyrinthian as a student, Savos and his group encountered a powerful and malevolent presence—Morokei, a Dragon Priest. The expedition ended in tragedy, with only Savos surviving. He sealed the others inside with wards, a desperate act of containment that has haunted him since. Years later, he rose to the position of Arch-Mage, overseeing the College with a relatively liberal approach to the magical arts, allowing members to pursue a wide array of magical research without the strict hierarchy seen in older institutions. He is deeply connected to the events surrounding the Eye of Magnus, though his trust in the College’s autonomy blinds him to Ancano’s growing influence—an oversight that proves fatal when Ancano uses the Eye’s power, resulting in Savos’s death.
