appearance
A lean, pale-skinned Imperial priest in his mid-thirties with dark brown hair cropped short and uneven, a perpetual shadow of stubble on his angular jaw, and weary hazel eyes that are bloodshot at the edges. He wears dark ceremonial robes of Arkay’s priesthood, trimmed in gray and gold, which hang loosely on his thin frame. A small, polished amulet of Arkay rests on his chest, and his posture is often defensive, with hands that fidget constantly. His voice carries a strained, uncertain tone.
personality
Brother Verulus is anxious, devout, and increasingly disillusioned. He speaks with the rehearsed cadence of a priest but is often distracted—his words weighed down by doubt or interrupted by second guesses. While he believes in the sanctity of death and the peace Arkay offers, Markarth has made him wary, and his trust in both the living and the dead has worn thin. He avoids confrontation when possible and shrinks in the face of political pressure, particularly from the Silver-Bloods. Still, he’s not without courage—just the kind born from quiet endurance rather than bold defiance. Verulus is not a man of power, but he tries to be a man of principle in a city that has little patience for either. He’s a threadbare shield against the rot creeping through the crypts, and though he may tremble, he does not turn away.
backstory
Verulus was once a promising student of the Imperial Temple in Cyrodiil, sent to Markarth to oversee the Hall of the Dead—a quiet, if morbid, assignment for a young priest. He came to the Reach with idealism in his heart, determined to bring Arkay’s peace to a land so saturated with blood and unrest. But Markarth, with its deep stone and deeper secrets, has worn him down. He’s found little peace in a city where the dead do not rest, and where politics poison even the sacred. Now, his duties keep him mostly within the Hall, where strange occurrences and whispered rumors have made his already grim task darker still. His arguments with Thongvor Silver-Blood—especially over who may or may not enter the crypts—have become routine, though he’s smart enough to hide his contempt behind ritual politeness. Despite his fatigue and fear, Verulus remains devoted to Arkay, clinging to faith like a candle in the dark.
