A brawny middle-aged Nord with a booming voice and a crooked smile, Hogni Red-Arm has forearms stained permanently red from years of butchering and hauling fresh game. His pale skin is weathered and nicked from careless knife work, and his thick, muscular arms are always bare beneath the rolled sleeves of his blood-splattered tunic. His fiery reddish-blond hair is worn loose and wild, with a matching beard often tangled and flecked with bits of sawdust or dried sinew. His piercing gray eyes glint with mischief and pride, and a jagged scar runs across the bridge of his nose. A bone-handled knife rests at his hip, well-worn but razor-sharp, more of a badge of trade than a weapon.

Hogni is hearty, bold, and fiercely independent. He talks like he chops—fast, loud, and with plenty of edge. He’s friendly to customers, loyal to regulars, and merciless to anyone who tries to haggle too low. Though he carries himself with the swagger of a man who could kill a bear with his bare hands (and insists he once did), Hogni has a big heart and keeps a careful eye on the other market vendors, especially the younger ones like Kerah. He’s deeply rooted in Nord tradition, distrusts magic, and has little patience for politics, though he’ll grumble loud enough about the Silver-Bloods for them to hear. Beneath the bravado, Hogni is one of the few people in Markarth who’s both genuinely honest and undeniably alive. His stall may reek of blood and smoke, but it’s also one of the few places in the city where you’ll always get a fair deal—and maybe a good laugh.
backstory
Hogni grew up in the forests near Falkreath, where he learned to hunt, trap, and butcher from his father, a meat trader with a talent for dressing game in record time. As a young man, Hogni made his way to Markarth, hauling cuts of elk and goat on his back until he earned enough to open a stall at the city’s main gate. While others bent to the influence of the Silver-Bloods or left the city’s stone walls for easier coin, Hogni stayed—gritty, loud, and unshakable. Known for offering the freshest cuts in the Reach and the most colorful stories to go with them, he’s something of a fixture in the market. Though he rarely speaks of it, it’s whispered he once served as a scout during the Great War, which might explain the combat scar, his constant alertness, and his particular hatred of Thalmor patrols.
