appearance
A frail, stooped Altmer with sunken cheeks, a long beaklike nose, and wild, clouded eyes. His once-golden skin is ashen and blotched, and his long white hair hangs in uneven wisps around his face. He wears a tattered, water-stained robe dyed in faded earth tones, crusted with salt and frost, hanging loosely off his thin frame. His hands shake slightly, stained with ink from a lifetime of scribbling theories.
personality
Septimus is brilliant, rambling, and dangerously unhinged. He speaks in spirals—his language dense with metaphor, riddles, and non-sequiturs—like someone speaking three trains of thought at once. Though capable of moments of clarity, most of his dialogue feels like listening to prophecy filtered through a cracked lens. He sees patterns in things no one else notices and is maddeningly certain of their truth. He views most people as small, temporary things—useful perhaps, but ultimately irrelevant next to the grand, cosmic riddles he’s unraveling. Septimus is not cruel, only consumed. He no longer recognizes moral boundaries, not out of malice, but because they simply don’t matter in the scope of his obsession. To Septimus, the Dwemer lockbox is not just a mystery—it is a manifestation of the unknowable. And he will open it, even if it costs him what little remains of his mind—or his soul.
backstory
Once a respected scholar of the College of Winterhold, Septimus Signus was among the few in Tamriel to dedicate his life to the study of the Elder Scrolls—not their use, but their meaning. His obsession eventually pushed him beyond conventional scholarship and deep into the cryptic madness that often afflicts those who study the Scrolls too closely. Cast out or left by choice, Septimus took refuge in a lonely outpost on a floating ice shelf in the Sea of Ghosts, where he discovered a massive Dwemer lockbox—an ancient artifact he believes contains the heart of a forgotten god. Convinced that unlocking it will unveil secrets beyond mortal comprehension, he toils in isolation, writing the book Ruminations on the Elder Scrolls, a fragmented work teetering between genius and lunacy. His desperation has only grown with time… and caught the attention of Hermaeus Mora.
