Persona 5 Unchained

I am Thou... Thou art I... Awaken your Persona for an adventure in Tokyo and the Metaverse!

Author's Note: This project is still a work in progress, but updates are frequent. At present, you can explore a portion of Tokyo either as Akira or a custom character. More locations are being added regularly. The Metaverse is loosely defined for now, and combat is fairly minimal, but the framework is flexible enough to support improvised play. Be sure to read the READ ME notes on the map; they include essential guidance for players. The Roadmap and Recent Updates sections below outline current progress. Remember to sync frequently to receive the latest content. You are Unchained. Play however you choose. Following the Persona plot is optional; light scaffolding exists to support that route, but you're never required to take it. With Franz, you can begin the story as anyone, in any way. He responds to your direction and adapts accordingly. The Narrative Guide allows further customization of how Franz delivers the story and how gameplay is shaped around your input. Two original characters are included as templates: one male, one female. Use them as a fresh starting point or create someone entirely your own. You're not restricted to Joker; several other playable characters will eventually have their own unique starting locations. If you’d like to talk more about the campaign or have any questions, join the Fables Discord. Look for Persona 5 Unchained in #share-public-creations. I'm there under the same name and can be pinged directly. In this RPG, think of it like Franz is driving a car with you in the passenger and me in the backseat. Franz is blind, I'm backseat driving, trying to nudge him toward our intended plot, but you, the player, are in the front passenger seat with the real control. You can start the game however you want, but it's a good idea to interact with Franz early on to establish key lore, set important facts, and establish a few memories, especially if you're not playing Akira. I''m doing my best to subtly guide him along the narrative, but your choices ultimately shape the story. If Franz veers off track or you need to make adjustments, feel free to edit your posts or use 'OOC' to clarify things out-of-character. You can also click the cycle symbol and direct him with your own input. This journey mixes the everyday struggles of life with the supernatural twists of the Metaverse, and remember you are unchained! You can delete these sections when you're done reading them.

Akihabara

Akihabara

A chaotic yet charming district bursting with color and life, this urban hotspot is the beating heart of pop culture obsession. Towering LED signs flash advertisements for the latest games, niche cafés, and anime merch while costumed employees beckon visitors toward themed restaurants and entertainment dens. A popular maid café at the corner draws regulars and tourists alike with its whimsical charm, while a towering retro arcade offers endless floors of old-school and modern games. Nearby, a cluttered machine parts shop deals in obscure components, visited by collectors and hobbyists alike. Tokobushiya sits nestled in a side alley, its shelves stuffed with rare and vintage manga, figures, and games. Every corner offers something new—from capsule toy dispensers to backroom card duels. It's loud, crowded, and endlessly strange, a place where fantasy and reality blur. Beneath its glossy surface, though, the district pulses with unseen currents and hidden connections.

The exterior is modest, with an old-fashioned sign hanging above the door, beckoning passersby with its warm glow. The walls are adorned with an eclectic mix of old photographs, personal knick-knacks, and memorabilia, offering a glimpse into the cafe’s long history. It's a place where both strangers and regulars can escape the noise of the outside world, sip a cup of coffee, and find solace in its quiet, unassuming charm.

Class 2-D

Class 2-D

Class 2-D at Shujin Academy is a typical classroom, with rows of desks facing the chalkboard, where lessons unfold under the watchful eyes of the teachers. The teachers often set the tone for the day, with quizzes popping up unexpectedly, testing students' knowledge on everything from history to literature. The classroom is also home to the infamous chalk-dodging moments, where students—particularly the protagonist—try to avoid the flying chalk during intense lectures, a trademark of teachers like Kamoshida. The school year includes moments of tension, especially around midterms and final exams, which add pressure to the students as they strive for good grades. These tests are critical to advancing through the year, but also serve as a backdrop for character development, as the protagonist and their friends balance their Phantom Thieves activities with schoolwork. Class 2-D is both a place of learning and a hub for the Phantom Thieves' plans, where friendships and conflicts intertwine.

Cognitive Zones

Cognitive Zones

Cognitive Zones are safe havens in both the real world and the Metaverse, allowing travelers to rest, recover, and regain their strength. Spending time here fully heals the party and restores their spells. In the real world, these places are cozy, peaceful spots—cafés, lounges, or hideouts—where one can relax. In the Metaverse, they exist where distortion is weak, often inhabited by Metabeings who remain untouched by corruption. In Palaces, Safe Rooms act as Respite Zones, areas where the ruler’s control is fragile, letting intruders rest without fear. Marked by stability, these rare sanctuaries are essential for surviving the journey.

Fuji no Yu bathhouse

Fuji no Yu bathhouse

Fuji no Yu bathhouse stands as a tranquil relic, its tiled roof and worn sign hinting at bygone days. Steam drifts from its chimney, blending with rain’s earthy scent on dreary days when it lies empty, the quiet pierced only by drops on the skylight. Inside, warm air carries a mineral tang, cedar walls glowing under lantern light. Stone pools ripple in a vast chamber, watched over by a vivid Mount Fuji mural in reds and whites, its peak veiled in mist. The changing room, with woven baskets and faded cushions, feels frozen in time, the drip of a faucet echoing in the hush. On rainy days, the deserted baths hold an eerie peace, as if the outside world has dissolved, leaving just steam and stone. Think harder more concise

Hangout Spots

Hangout Spots

Hangout Spots are places in Tokyo where you can spend time alone or with friends during downtime. These spots offer a break from the chaos of daily life, allowing you to relax and build bonds. Popular hangouts include the arcade, movie theaters, batting cages, the beach, shrines, fancy dining, fishing spots, and more! Each offering a unique experience. Whether it's enjoying a fun activity or simply chatting, these locations are perfect for unwinding. In the Metaverse, hangouts are exclusive to fellow Phantom Thieves or Metabeings you’ve met, offering a rare chance to share moments of peace in an otherwise distorted world. These spots allow you to deepen relationships and enjoy a sense of normalcy in the midst of adventure.

Mental Shutdowns

Mental Shutdowns

Mental Shutdowns are mysterious, unexplained events where a person's cognitive functions suddenly fail, leading to death. These shutdowns are the result of a powerful, hidden force manipulating the minds of individuals, orchestrated by the shadowy figure, the "Black Mask," and the larger group known as the "Phantom Thieves." The cause of these shutdowns is rooted in the cognitive world, where people's distorted desires manifest. Certain individuals, often high-ranking figures in society, have their minds forcibly erased by a force that manipulates their cognition, causing their minds to collapse in on themselves. While the public believes these deaths to be natural, the Phantom Thieves' actions target the heart of the corrupt, leading to the eventual downfall of those responsible for the cognitive manipulations. The Mental Shutdowns serve as a dark reminder of the twisted power that controls the real world, and the consequences of ignoring or manipulating human desires.

Meta Tokyo

Meta Tokyo

Meta Tokyo is the mirrored version of Tokyo within the Metaverse, shaped by the collective unconscious and warped by society’s perceptions. It distorts reality, creating twisted landscapes where personal desires materialize. Within Meta Tokyo, Palaces manifest in locations important to individuals whose distorted desires have escalated. These Palaces are sustained by a Treasure, an item of deep significance to the ruler. The largest Palace, Mementos, represents the collective distortion of the public and serves as a vast, multi-layered dungeon that extends deep below Meta Tokyo. Along the journey down, trains carry Shadows, representations of people's repressed desires, towards the bottom, further entrenching the space in the distorted will of society. The entire landscape is a chaotic reflection of human desires, and the deeper one goes, the more dangerous and oppressive the environment becomes. Shadows are not inheritly hostile, but they are never friendly.

Metabeings in the Metaverse

Metabeings in the Metaverse

Metabeings are uncommon creatures found in Meta Tokyo, always friendly to humans within the Metaverse. They inhabit spaces not corrupted by distortion called cognitive zones, such as sacred locations, safe havens, or reformed areas after the treasure has been stolen from a Palace. Examples include Metaverse versions of churches, safe spaces like Café Leblanc, or recently defeated Palaces that reform to less corrupted versions. Metabeings operate unique shops and offer services that are invaluable to travelers in the Metaverse, providing goods or guidance not found elsewhere. Unlike hostile Shadows or Palace rulers, they avoid conflict and focus on helping those who find their sanctuaries. These locations offer brief respite from the chaos of Meta Tokyo, providing comfort and recovery. Metabeings only exist in their true forms in the Metaverse. In the real world, they appear as ordinary creatures—quirky strangers or animals—blending into everyday life, their mystique hidden.

Metaverse Navigator (Metanav App)

Metaverse Navigator (Metanav App)

The Metaverse Navigator (Metanav App) is an essential tool for navigating both Meta Tokyo and the Metaverse, a distorted realm shaped by the collective unconscious. The app allows users to access and travel between Palaces—cognitive spaces created by distorted desires—and Mementos, the collective Palace of the public. To enter a Palace, the user must input three key details: the ruler's name, the nature of their distortion, and the location of the Palace. Without these, finding a Palace is nearly impossible. The Metanav also helps users explore Meta Tokyo, the mirrored version of the city in the Metaverse, and pinpoint areas of distortion. It provides vital information, maps out routes, and acts as a guide through the twisted and dangerous landscapes of the Metaverse. In addition, the app assists in remembering places of respite, such as those run by Metabeings, offering some relief in the otherwise perilous journey.

Navigating the Metaverse

Navigating the Metaverse

The Metaverse is a distorted realm shaped by humanity's twisted desires. To navigate this world, users rely on the Metaverse Navigator (Metanav App), which can locate Palaces if the user knows the ruler’s name, their distortion, and the related location. Without this information, finding a specific Palace is nearly impossible. The app can also identify stable, safe areas in Meta Tokyo, where distortion is absent, offering temporary respite. The app records activity for returning to locations in the metaverse. The app is also vital for finding Mementos, the collective Palace of the public, a vast dungeon. To survive in the Metaverse, users must possess a Persona, brute strength, or a silver tongue. As regular humans cannot withstand the realm's psychological and physical toll. The app is essential for tracking Palaces, avoiding danger, and uncovering hidden truths.

Palaces

Palaces

Palaces are cognitive spaces formed when an individual’s desires become extreme, anchored by a Treasure, an item of deep significance. Palace rulers are unaware of their Palace, but their mindset becomes more entrenched. Shadows, drawn by the ruler’s Shadow, defend the Palace and can be fought or negotiated with. Stealing the Treasure collapses the Palace, forcing great remorse in ruler’s psyche, making them repent and change. Palaces can be found, their location a sanctuary to the ruler, but there are rules to enter a Palace. To enter, one get the Palace Key from three keywords: Ruler Name Keyword, Distortion Keyword, and Location Keyword. Without all three, Palaces are impossible to enter without special permission from the owner. Like living in the location.

With allies, he forms the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, using the Metaverse Navigator (Metanav) to infiltrate Palaces, steal Treasures, and reform corrupt individuals. Their actions gain public attention and government scrutiny, while a deeper conspiracy unfolds involving Shido, a powerful politician connected to Ren’s past. Beyond Palaces, they explore Meta Tokyo, a mirrored version of Tokyo, and Mementos, the public’s collective Palace, located in the subways below Meta Tokyo.

Phantom Theives

Phantom Theives

The Phantom Thieves infiltrate Palaces in the Metaverse to change the hearts of corrupt individuals. They steal treasures—physical representations of rulers’ distorted desires—to force change. The group also explores Mementos, a shared subconscious space, to tackle requests by defeating Shadows and demons. Their goal is justice through the exposure of corruption. They send Calling Cards to mark their thefts, signaling the target's impending change. Each Thief has a unique Persona, representing their inner strength. The group operates outside the law, working secretly to overthrow those who exploit others. To succeed, they navigate Meta Tokyo, the distorted reflection of the real world. The Phantom Thieves function as a team, combining their individual abilities to bring about change.

Players entering Shinjuku can pursue leads at the Crossroads Bar, encounter illicit rumors, or stumble into odd jobs that test Charm, Guts, or Kindness. The streets pulse with side stories: washed-up writers, desperate lovers, police turncoats. Here, social skills are currency. The district is ideal for gathering intel on targets, unlocking new confidants, or shaping public perception through underground means. Fortune tellers, drunks, and broken dreamers line the map. But every flickering sign and smoke-curled breath hides something usable—if you know how to look.

The Metaverse

The Metaverse

The Metaverse, "Meta Tokyo", is a world born from the collective unconscious. This magical domain pulses with supernatural energy, where shadows and demons roam instead of people, their forms as varied as their personalities. Magic is real, warping the familiar into distorted versions of their real world counterparts. Tokyo’s streets persist in structure, but their essence distorts into different versions. Some corrupted and dark, other virbrant and whimsical, varied like Human's thoughts. Buildings retain their size, yet their facades twist into thematic reflections of hidden cravings, shaped by the masses’ minds. Metabeings shed their mundane disguises, unveiling their true, otherworldly forms—monstrous, or friendly. This is a changing, fluid world, where every corner bends under the weight of distorted human yearning, a stark contrast to the tangible, unyielding real. The Metanav app is required to travel to the Metaverse, but only requires keywords discover Palace locations.

This is a world anchored firmly in the tangible, where the extraordinary is absent, and life unfolds in predictable rhythm, untouched by the surreal distortions of any hidden domain. The Metanav app is required to travel back to the Real World from the Metaverse, but only requires keywords discover Palace locations.

Igor, now seated at a warden’s desk, observes from his position of authority, Lavenza by his side, a quiet, commanding presence. Flanking him are Caroline and Justine, two sharp-eyed attendants who act as the prison guards, their stern expressions a constant reminder of the rules Akira must defy.

Tokyo

Tokyo (東京) is the capital city of Japan, and the main location in the series. “A vast city where shadows weave dark webs, Tokyo throbs with millions—some blind, others trapped by boundless desires. Day gleams with glass towers; night lures the daring beyond the veil.” In the Phantom Thieves’ era, Tokyo blends chaos and calm. Shibuya’s frantic crossing teems with students and workers under neon skies, while subways pulse with life. Beneath lies the Metaverse, a twisted realm of Palaces—each a scar of corrupt hearts, bending reality via the MetaNav. Yongen-Jaya hides rebels with coffee and Personas. Shinjuku’s red glow trades secrets, Akihabara buzzes with tech, and Kichijoji’s jazz masks power deals.
