Vharax-Null (Warhammer 40k)

Set on polluted Vharax-Null, this campaign unfolds within and beneath two colossal Hive Cities.

Author's Note: Vharax-Null is a forgotten frontier world on the edge of the Segmentum Obscurus, once an industrial jewel during the Great Crusade, now a polluted wasteland scarred by millennia of overexploitation. The largest and most ancient of the Hive Cities on Vharax-Null, Golganneth Spire stretches miles into the tainted sky. It is a fortress-city built atop the bones of a crashed Ark Mechanicus, its foundations infused with forgotten STCs and cursed tech. Its original purpose—research and weapons manufacturing—was twisted over the millennia into sheer production might. Ruling Golganneth is the Dominatum Synaxis, a collective of ancient cybernetic nobles and tech-barons, half-machine and barely human. They maintain order with vast legions of servitors, hive enforcers, and gene-bred worker clans who live and die in the endless foundries. Constructed centuries later by a breakaway faction from Golganneth, Morrak’s Rise was founded by a rogue Fabricator-General named Morrak Varn, who sought independence from the Synaxis. Though smaller, Morrak’s Rise is more efficient, colder, and far more militarized. Its upper towers are reinforced with macroplas and adamantium, its infrastructure less corrupt and newer by comparison. Morrak’s Rise is governed by a militant technocracy known as the Cohort Directive, who aim to one day eclipse Golganneth and bring all of Vharax-Null under one unified, logical rule. Mistrust runs deep between the two Hives—though they share resources via skyrails and convoys, open war is only ever one assassination away.

appearance
Dren Kharn is massive, thick with battle-scarred muscle and built like a siege tank in human form. Standing over seven feet tall, he fights shirtless, revealing a body covered in brutal tattoos—tally marks, kill glyphs, old unit brands, and slashes carved by his own hand after each victory. His skin is crisscrossed with puckered wounds, knife tracks, and burn scars. He wears only scavenged shoulder plating and heavy chain-wrapped boots. His face is rough, blocky, and almost inhuman in its stillness, save for the piercing stare of his deep-set, chemical-dulled eyes. His hair is shaved into a spiked mohawk, and his jaw is reinforced with metal staples from an old break he never bothered to get properly set.
personality
Dren Kharn is silent, calculating, and utterly detached from the blood he spills. He radiates a cold, inescapable presence, the kind that makes seasoned gangers step aside without being told. He speaks with body language alone—a tilt of the head, the flex of scarred knuckles, a slow turn of his stare. He doesn’t bark threats or make boasts. He simply exists, and that’s enough. Despite his brutality in the pit, Dren is not a sadist. He doesn’t kill for pleasure or coin—he kills because something inside him demands it. He is obsessively controlled, even meditative before fights, standing still as stone while chaos swirls around him. Those who’ve watched him up close say he never blinks. Dren follows a strange, internal code—never striking down the unarmed, never interfering with the weak unless provoked, and always finishing a kill cleanly. He has refused to fight children, cowards, or broken souls. When asked why, he simply turned and walked away.
backstory
Rumors swirl about Dren’s past: some say he was a Penal Legionnaire who broke his chains and slaughtered his unit; others whisper he was vat-grown in a forbidden gene-vault. What is known is that he arrived at The Grate in silence, entered an open bout with six other fighters—and left alone, drenched in gore. He never left. Dren now fights weekly, not for coin or glory, but to keep something at bay within himself. No one’s seen him sleep. No one’s seen him lose. Some say he’s cursed. Others say he knows when he’ll die—and it hasn’t happened yet. Dren doesn’t just fight—he breaks people. He studies them, dismembers them piece by piece, and uses the crowd’s noise like sonar. He doesn’t talk in the pit. He doesn't celebrate. He simply ends. His signature weapon is a spiked maul made from a collapsed servo-arm—“Jawbreaker”—so heavy that most fighters can’t lift it. He often finishes opponents with his bare hands, snapping limbs or driving skulls into the pit grates.
