Vharax-Null (Warhammer 40k)

Set on polluted Vharax-Null, this campaign unfolds within and beneath two colossal Hive Cities.

Author's Note: Vharax-Null is a forgotten frontier world on the edge of the Segmentum Obscurus, once an industrial jewel during the Great Crusade, now a polluted wasteland scarred by millennia of overexploitation. The largest and most ancient of the Hive Cities on Vharax-Null, Golganneth Spire stretches miles into the tainted sky. It is a fortress-city built atop the bones of a crashed Ark Mechanicus, its foundations infused with forgotten STCs and cursed tech. Its original purpose—research and weapons manufacturing—was twisted over the millennia into sheer production might. Ruling Golganneth is the Dominatum Synaxis, a collective of ancient cybernetic nobles and tech-barons, half-machine and barely human. They maintain order with vast legions of servitors, hive enforcers, and gene-bred worker clans who live and die in the endless foundries. Constructed centuries later by a breakaway faction from Golganneth, Morrak’s Rise was founded by a rogue Fabricator-General named Morrak Varn, who sought independence from the Synaxis. Though smaller, Morrak’s Rise is more efficient, colder, and far more militarized. Its upper towers are reinforced with macroplas and adamantium, its infrastructure less corrupt and newer by comparison. Morrak’s Rise is governed by a militant technocracy known as the Cohort Directive, who aim to one day eclipse Golganneth and bring all of Vharax-Null under one unified, logical rule. Mistrust runs deep between the two Hives—though they share resources via skyrails and convoys, open war is only ever one assassination away.

Zealot
Melee

Zealot

Zealots are unwavering warriors of faith, driven by absolute conviction in the divine will of the Emperor. Whether they serve the Ecclesiarchy, a sanctioned cult, or a firebrand preacher in the depths of a hive, Zealots live to purge heresy, uphold sacred law, and strike down all deemed impure or corrupt. Psykers, mutants, daemons, and hereteks are common enemies, but a Zealot’s true mission is broader: to prepare the Imperium for the Emperor’s return, however their creed interprets it.

Officer (Navis Imperialis)
Melee

Officer (Navis Imperialis)

An Officer of the Navis Imperialis commands with precision and unwavering discipline. Trained to lead in the void, they oversee crew, firepower, and faith aboard the Emperor’s warships. Clad in formal void-uniforms and bearing authority like a weapon, they execute orders without hesitation. On worlds like Vharax-Null, their word can reroute convoys—or level cities from orbit.

Psyker

Spellcaster

Psyker

A psyker is a being who exhibits the ability to use psychic powers. The Psyker mutation is becoming increasingly common among humanity, presaging the emergence of a new, psychic race. This new race is still weak, its members lacking the mental strength needed to resist the dangers of the Warp. They are both a threat and a boon to the Imperium. Left unchecked, psykers present a potential danger to entire worlds, and much of the Inquisition's role is focused on hunting them down.

Urchin
Melee

Urchin

Urchins and Pickpockets are commonplace in any Hive City, especially the Underhives of those cities. In a galaxy where there is only war, there is no shortage of orphans who take to the streets and steal to survive.

Servitor
Melee

Servitor

A servitor is the catch-all term applied to a wide class of mindless, cybernetic drones created from a fusion of Human flesh and robotic technology that are used to carry out simple, manual tasks across the Imperium of Man.

Scavver
Melee

Scavver

Scavver's are a catch-all term for those dispossessed members of humanity that inhabit the hives’ abandoned factories and hab levels, as well as the hive shanties. They scrape a living from scavenging materials and tech for trade.

Medicae
Melee

Medicae

Medicae is the term in High Gothic that is commonly used in the Imperium to refer to any type of biomedical knowledge or practice. Medicae specialists in the Imperium can include the civilian chirurgeons, medicae servitors, physicians, nurses and other healers of the state-controlled hospitals and clinics of the Administratum's Officio Medicae present on many of the more advanced Imperial worlds.

Missionary
Melee

Missionary

A missionary is a disciple of the Imperial Creed and a priest of the Adeptus Ministorum. Missionaries spread the Imperial Cult and defend it from the core worlds of the Imperium of Man to the far-flung edges of the galaxy. Missionaries spread their belief in the divinity of the God-Emperor across the long-settled worlds of the Imperium, as well as to recently rediscovered Human-settled planets. The oldest missionaries are instinctive survivors.

Ganger
Melee

Ganger

Gangs are violent, armed, territorial groups that can be found throughout the Imperium. Hive Worlds are known for their extensive amount of gangs. Even Terra has a huge number of gangs formed from the destitute non-adept population.

Hive Worker
Melee

Hive Worker

The Hive Worker is a resilient and resourceful individual, navigating the treacherous underbelly of a sprawling Hive City in the Imperium of Mankind. Skilled in survival and trade, they utilize their knowledge of the hive's intricate networks and their ability to negotiate with various factions to thrive amidst the chaos of the 41st Millennium.

Tech-Priest
Melee

Tech-Priest

A Tech-Priest is an adept of the Adeptus Mechanicus of the Imperium of Man who is generally responsible for maintaining all of the advanced technology of the Imperium, enlarging the Imperium's stocks of technical knowledge and conducting what little new scientific research occurs within the Imperium since the end of the Horus Heresy. Though their bodies often incorporate many inorganic components as bionic replacements, Tech-priests are fully Human, unlike cybernetic servitors.

Inquisitor

Spellcaster

Inquisitor

An Inquisitor is a clandestine agent and one of the highest-ranking members of the Holy Ordos of the Emperor's Inquisition. Inquisitors serve as the secret police and intelligence agents of the Imperium and their authority is theoretically second only to that of the Emperor Himself. Split into three main orders or "ordos majoris," the Ordo Xenos (Alien Hunters), the Ordo Malleus (Daemonhunters) and the Ordo Hereticus (Witch Hunters)

Adeptus Arbites
Melee

Adeptus Arbites

The Adeptus Arbites face a monumental task to enforce the law across countless Imperial worlds. Those that take the oaths, don the Carapace Armour, and take Shock Maul in hand are often obsessive and pitiless individuals, who see the law as an extension of the Emperor's will upon His subjects, and its enforcement their sacred duty.
