During the the scouring, a war between man and dragons. The power clash of the dragons and the weapons known as the eight legendary weapons that had been created by mankind to combat dragons created a calamity known as the ending winter. The affects of this caused dragons to be unable to maintain their dragon forms. They had to seal their forms into gems and become human. Though they are able to temporarily assume their dragons forms through use of their dragonstones.
