Born in T.A. 2926, Hamfast Gamgee, affectionately known as the Gaffer, became a skilled gardener at Bag End, where he worked under Bilbo Baggins. He married Bell Goodchild and raised six children, including the famous Samwise, who took over his gardening duties as he aged.
