Half-elf
Half-elven (Sindarin singular Peredhel, plural Peredhil), are the children of the Union of Elves and Men. Half-elven are not a distinct race per se; rather, they were fertile offspring as the result of a union between Elves and Men.
Dwarf
The Dwarves, or Khazâd in their own tongue, are beings of short stature, often friendly with Hobbits although long suspicious of Elves. They are typically blacksmiths and stoneworkers by profession, unrivalled in some of their arts even by the Elves.
Elf
The Elves (Quendi) are the first of the races of the Children of Ilúvatar, known also as the Firstborn for that reason. The Elves are distinguished from the other two races, the Men and the Dwarves, especially by the fact of their near immortality.
Man
Men are one of the Kindreds of the Children of Ilúvatar. Men are called the Secondborn (or the Second Kindred) by the Elves, their Elder brethren, because they were the last of all the incarnate races to come into being. Though they were born after the other sentient races, Men are destined to inherit and rule Middle-earth.
Hobbit
Hobbits are a small race that typically dwell underground, believed to be related to Men. Hobbits are between two and four feet tall, with differences between male and female: about 3 feet 6 inches for males and seldom exceeded 3 feet for female. They have short legs, slightly pointed ears and furry feet with leathery soles, resulting in most never wearing shoes. Compared to the Dwarves they are a bit shorter and less stout or stocky.
Eagle
Eagles, also known as Great Eagles, are immense, sentient birds that serve as messengers of Manwë. They are capable of speech and often help Men, Elves and Wizards in their efforts to defeat foes such as Morgoth and Sauron.
Ent
The Ents are sentient, humanoid beings created at the request of Yavanna to protect the trees from other creatures, particularly Dwarves, and thus were called "Shepherds of the Trees".
Maia
The Maiar (plural for Maia) were those spirits which descended into Ëa to assist the Valar in the shaping of Arda. The Maiar and Valar were collectively known as the Ainur, though the Maiar were of lesser power and majesty. Their number is unknown and few were named, and not all took visible shapes in Middle-earth. Most folk don't know that they walk among them.
Wraith
Wraiths, also known as the Houseless and the Unbodied, are beings who were killed yet remain in existence by some dark sorcery such as necromancy or a Morgul-blade, or someone who died in darkness or serious dishonor.
