Sunspear is the capital of Dorne and the ancestral seat of House Martell, located on the southeastern coast of Westeros near the Dornish Sea. It is both a palace and a stronghold, and serves as the political and cultural heart of Dorne. Unlike other regions of Westeros, Dorne is influenced by Rhoynish traditions, reflected in Sunspear’s customs, architecture, and ruling structure. The area is known for its harsh, arid climate, and its people are proud, independent, and resilient. Sunspear symbolizes Dorne’s defiance, especially its long history of resistance against Targaryen conquest and its unique practice of equal inheritance rights for men and women.

Built of pale yellow sandstone, the palace complex features tall, narrow towers—including the iconic Tower of the Sun with its golden dome and the Spear Tower that pierces the sky like a blade. The architecture includes winding courtyards, domed roofs, shaded gardens, and water features such as pools and fountains that offer relief from the blistering Dornish heat. The surrounding city is a maze of narrow alleys and flat-roofed buildings made to withstand the desert heat.
