Author's Note: This world is based off of the D&D 5th edition campaign book "Tomb of Annihilation" which takes place in the Forgotten Realms.

Ataaz Kahakla

Ataaz Kahakla

The river canyon called Ataaz Kahakla ("Gorge of Death" in Ancient Chultan) inspires wonder in most people who see it. The cliff walls, which vary from 50 to 200 feet high are lined with row upon row of coral. It's all dead but it retains its rainbow colors making the canyon into a breathtaking, psuedo-underwater seascape. The canyon lies upon the River Tath which runs from the Aldani Basin to the Jahaka Bay.

Ataaz Muhahah

Ataaz Muhahah

Ataaz Muhahah (translated to "Laughing Gorge" in ancient Chultan) is a gaping chasm which the River Olung runs at the bottom. An ancient stone bridge called the Monkey Bridge spans over the gorge. The structure gots its name from the monkeys that perch on its walls and hang by their tails from the underside. The monkeys are a mix of living monkeys and ancient carvings that are part of the bridge. Most of the carvings have been damaged by time, but the skilled artistry remains apparent. The living monkeys chatter and shriek continually, and the gorge echoes with the sound of their cries. Symbolic mazes are carved prominently onto the bridge and its supports. Chultans would know that the maze is the symbol of Ubtao, an ancient Chultan deity.

The two largest ziggurats are topped with a wild maze of shops and tenements. The upper levels are cleaner and more organized than the ones at street level. A wooden bridge connects the two ziggurats at the upper levels. The nearby Executioner's Run can be seen from the upper levels.

Camp Righteous

Camp Righteous

On the east bank of the River Soshenstar, the Order of the Gauntlet set up a camp of canvas tents at the base of a large and ancient Chultan statue however they had to flee for some reason. The statue resembles a man sitting on a hill and carrying a crocodile on his back. Built under the statue is a shrine called the House of the Man and Crocodile which follows an old Chultan myth. In the myth, a crocodile agreed to carry a man across a river if the man would also carry the crocodile after. The crocodile tricked the man and stayed on his back forever as no time limit was stated. The shrine is heavily trapped and protects a relic at the back. All of the shrine's traps and puzzles can be solved by one person carrying another.

Camp Vengeance

Camp Vengeance

This fort is occupied by the Order of the Gauntlet, a coalition of morally upstanding warriors, knights, paladins, and clerics dedicated to the destruction of evil. After fleeing Camp Righteous they fled further upstream. The fort has crude walls of timber with watchtowers and tents inside. Around the walls is a ditch bristling with sharpened stakes. A large gatehouse faces the west bank of the River Soshenstar. Camp Vengeance, led by war veteran Commader Breakbone, has had a host of recent problems. Low supplies, inaccurate maps, sickness and insects from standing pools of water inside and outside the camp, and attacks from carnivorous dinosaurs by day and undead horrors by night.

Dinosaur Pens

Most of the beasts of burden in the city were trained here and are penned up at night. Ankylosauruses and triceratopses are the most common. Dinosaurs used in the street race are also housed here with the biggest winners having the most protection. While the area isn't protected from the dangers of the jungle, the dinosaurs alert the locals if they are spooked.

Dry Dock

Port Nyanzaru isn't famous for its shipbuilding but many damaged ships may come here for repairs especially those that run into typhoons, pirates, or the dragon turtle in the Bay of Chult.

Dungrunglung

Dungrunglung

Dungrunglung is a village of grungs, frog-like humanoids, that are led by a gold-skinned grung named King Groak. Groak holds absolute sway over his fellow grung subjects however his madness has led him to become obsessed with summoning the ancient Chultan grung goddess Nangnang and mate with her. A red, female grung named Krr'ook fears the summoning ritual will fail and has concocted a desparate plan to fool the king. At Dungrunglung's center is a large, stone, frog statue in a pond where King Groak lives. Around the pond are the hovels of the other grungs. Protecting the village is a wild ring of thorny bushes arranged in a labyrinthine maze. The maze protects the grungs from the dangers of the surrounding jungles.

Dye Works

Many vats of smelly but vibrant dyes are used to dye the local garments which are sought after by locals and exported to people afar. The nearby sea cliffs are colored a rainbow of colors after vats are dumped into the ocean.

Executioner's Run

Executioner's Run

The Executioner's Run is a 15 feet deep, 50 feet wide, and 200 feet long stone, rectangular pit. The central road of the Old City splits around Executioner's Run. The pit is primarily used as a way to deal with criminals giving it its name. Criminals are released on one end and some dangerous beast like a dinosaur is released on the other. If the criminal can make it to the other end and crawl up a knotted rope, they win their freedom. The brutal event has turned into a sport with betting and the occasional Chultan becoming a local celebrity through their experience. The pit isn't completely safe and the occasional beast can get out.

Firefinger

Rising high above the jungle canopy is a 300 foot tall naturally formed spire of rock with smoke issuing from a flaming beacon at the top of it. The walls of the spire are sheer and dotted with small caves. Frail-looking ladders hang from narrow ledges at various heights. A small flock of pterafolk, reptilian bipeds native to Chult, have made the caves their home. They bring back what they find in the jungle to this lair. Long ago, the ancient Chultans used Firefinger as a natural watchtower.

Fish Market

Fish Market

Seafood is a staple in Port Nyanzaru and the harborside Fish Market is the principle place to buy it. The air consistently smells of fish guts.

Fort Beluarian

Fort Beluarian

The flag of the Flaming Fist, a mercenary company, flies over this wooden stockade. The whole structure sits atop a 10 foot tall hillock with sides which have been shaved to be near vertical making them steep and difficult to climb. The fort's main gate faces west. On the east side of the stockade, a tall keep holds a commanding view of the surrounding wilderness. The Flaming Fist have built this fort as a command base on Chult. They are here to exploit local resources and push back the undead menace. A small dirt road leads from the fort to a dock on the bank of the Bay of Chult.

Fort Nyanzaru

The small fort contains a winch for raising and lowering an immense iron chain stretched between the fort and the lighthouse. When the chain is raised, no ship can sail in or out of the harbor. The chain hasn't been raised for decades. The fort roof contains two mounted ballistas that can launch heavy bolts. Its garrison is mostly town guards.

Goldenthrone

Goldenthrone

The Goldenthrone palace serves as the seat of local government. The Merchant Princes meet here to decide laws and meet with locals in their offices. The Goldenthrone was built decades ago and is the most opulent building in the city. The palace is heavily guarded night and day.

Grand Coliseum

Grand Coliseum

The Grand Coliseum is the site of gladiatorial games (that are usually non-lethal but accidents happen), bloody animal combats, and spectacular circuses. The best gladiators become celebrities and earn fortunes. Statues of the greatest champions line the surrounding plaza. The Coliseum has multiple enchantments that allow it to simulate a variety of lighting and environment effects.

Grand Souk

Grand Souk

The Grand Souk is the largest marketplace in Port Nyanzaru. Traders from far away come here to trade in exotic goods and items while buying resources and other treasures found in Chult. Traders from up and down the Sword Coast come to this market to buy timber, spices, medicines concoted from jungle plants, dinosaur skulls and claws, iron, tiger pelts, carved ivory, colored feathers, tropical fruit, monkey, and all the other riches in Chult. Colorful awnings protect the market from the wind and rain. Guards and pickpockets are plentiful.

Hall of Gold

Hall of Gold

Waukeen is the god of trade and wealth and is not local to Chult's history. The temple is built on the highest hill in the city and its shining golden, domed roof can be seen for miles. As Waukeen's domain is closely connected to trade, worship of Waukeen is common and its devotees are well-respected. The interior of the temple is richly decorated.

Harbormaster's Office

Harbormaster's Office

The harbormaster is in charge with ensuring the docks run smoothly. Outside the office is a bulletin board that provides the names and whereabouts of several wilderness guides.

Jewel Market

Jewel Market

The Jewel Market is intentionally styled as a miniature version of the Grand Souk. Its chief business is buying and selling the rich supply of jewels mined out of the Chultan mines. This market is largely secure against thieves due to a network secret guards patrolling it.

Kaya's House of Repose

Kaya's House of Repose

Kaya's House of Repose is a quiet tavern and inn that caters to individuals looking for a peaceful evening. Various smells of spices, wine, and tobacco is in the air and the lighting is dim. A bed for the night costs 1 gp.

Lighthouse

Lighthouse

A flame burns atop the lighthouse day and night to guide ships through the darkness, fog, and rain to the harbor. Various powders can be added to the fire to create thick columns of colored smoke that can be seen for miles.

Mezro

Mezro

The ruined city of Mezro forms a circle. Four main avenues to the north, south, east, and west meet at a central plaza. The whole ruin has subsided to that the River Olung flows over the ancient wharfs. Crumbling, vine-covered buildings rise above the flooded streets that are not more like canals than roadways. The site is eerily quiet. The ruins have been thoroughly ransacked by the Flaming Fist and patrols still visit the site regularly, partly as training for new recruits and partly to make sure nothing was missed.

Port Castigliar

Port Castigliar

Port Castigliar is a port in name only. In fact, it's nothing more than a stretch of beach with an abandoned supply depot, seven battered huts made of bamboo and thatch, and a defiled graveyard. Undead drove away the inhabitants years ago and ghouls dug up the graves.

Public Bathhouse

Public Bathhouse

Port Nyanzaru is a fairly clean city thanks to the consistent rain but its residents are picky about hygiene due to the common talk of disease. This public bathhouse sees many visitors everyday and has a variety of services. It is owned and operated by the priestess of Sune. Various indoor and outdoor pools with flowing fountains wash the masses of mechants and dockworkers in the city There is no charge to visit but donations are requested.

Red Bazaar

Red Bazaar

Nobody knows how the Red Bazaar got its name. One rumor is that it was named after the immense slabs of dinosaur meat sold here. The Red Bazaar sells everyday and household goods rather than far-off exotics. Locals frequent this market the most.

Refuse Pit

Refuse Pit

An enormous sinkhole serves as the city's garbage dump. Every type of refuse gets tossed here including dead bodies. It's a festering scar of garbage, rancid water, and vermin. Although the level of the pit rises and falls, it never gets full. Rumors say that something eats the garbage at the bottom.

Statue

Statue

The statue located in the center of the harbor represents an ancient Chultan king in full regalia, resplendent in a loin-cloth of leopard skin and a headdress of feathers, shells, and tyrannosaurus teeth. The local residents of Port Nyanzaru call the king Na N'buso, or the Great King. The forgotten history of the statue is that it is not ancient but built recently and used to impress traders.

Temple of Gond

Temple of Gond

Gond is the god of crafting, smithing, and invention. He is not a local deity to Chult and was brought here within the last 100 years with the artisans who sailed here. The centerpiece of the temple is an immense fontain with many water jets constantly shifting to create amazing shapes. The water jets are controlled by nozzles and valves hidden underneath moving on cams and the city's plentiful water pressure.

Savras is a god of wizards, fortune tellers, diviners, and those who unfailing speak the truth regardless of whether listeners want to hear it. Like most of the temples in the city, Savras is a deity brought here by the traders in the last 100 years but this temple is the oldest. His symbol is a crystal ball filled with eyes. The roof of the temple is a great dome that from above resembles an unblinking eye staring skyward. Merchants may use the services of the temple to try and predict the outcome of their trades and businesses.

Temple of Sune

Sune is a benevolent goddess of beauty and passion and not native to Chult. This temple is isolated atop a rocky formation in the sea and is only reachable by an elevated causeway or by boat. When seen from a distance, the temple's roof seemes to float in midair due to an illusionary effect cause by mirrors lining the outer walls. Inside, Sune's faithful and casual visitors alike can partake in public baths, receive lessons in applying makeup and styling one's hair, and learn to dress in a manner that suits the individual. The priestesses of Sune are picky on who enters the temple.

Temple of Tymora

Tymora is a goddess of good luck and is not native to this land. The temple is built like a sturdy blockhouse of heavy stone. Residents use it as safe refuge during floods or undead outbreaks. The locals of Malar's Throat don't consider themselves lucky but what luck they do have they attribute to Tymora.

Thundering Lizard

The Thundering Lizard caters to raucous clintele and is often noisy into the night. The air smells of spilled liquor and furniture may be lopsided from a previous fight. The front entrance is through a the skeletal jaws of some long-dead, massive dinosaur. One of the most popular drinks at the bar is tej, an amber-colored, fermented drink made from honey. A bed for the night costs 5 sp.

Warehouses

Warehouses

Goods of every type are stored in large stone buildings. Canals run between the rows of warehouses for easier loading and unloading. The harbormaster oversees that the canals do not become blocked.

Wreck of the Narwhal

Wreck of the Narwhal

Through some magical mishap, a seafaring galleon called the Narwhal ended up in the middle of the jungle. It still lies covered in barnacles but now also overgrown with vines. The crew is gone without a trace but the old ship now is occupied by a weretiger named Bwayes O'tamu.

Wyrmheart Mines

Wyrmheart Mines

The center of these dwarven mines is a 3 level, open, circular mine shaft. A spiraling minetrack descends from ground level to the base. A wooden bridge spans the gap on the center level. At the various levels, small tunnels radiate out to different mining points. The mine has been abandoned for a few years and is starting to decay making some places dangerous. At the base, down a large tunnel is the lair of Tzindelor, better known as Tinder, a yound female red dragon. She spends most of her time here dozing atop her treasure pile. Otherwise, she's out hunting and terrorizing her neighbors. The dragon is inclined to kill anyone she doesn't recognize but might converse with adventurers who have something interesting to say.

Yellyark

Yellyark

Yellyark is home to the Biting Ant Tribe of Batiri goblins. The goblins here wear stylized wooden ant masks and mark the perimeter of their territory with the heads and skulls of their enemies. The leader of the village is Queen Grabstab. To protect themselves against giant carnivores, the goblins built the important structures of the village atop a net of strong vines and branches. The net is rigged to a heavy tree, bent over like a spring. When a predator threatens to overrun the village, goblins cut the vine and the entire village is rolled into a ball and flung thousands of yards over the jungle. The huts inside are cushioned from impact by layers of leaves and moss. The tribe's survival depends on getting early warning of approaching danger using stealthy scouts patrolling the area and hidden tripwires rigged to alarms.
